THE BEGINNING

How Kereru began

We came to live in the Pohangina Valley in the Manawatu region in 1981, bringing a burgeoning interest in soap making, and the Good Earth in general. We also tried our hand at hand-dipped candles, trialling tallow & beeswax (soft to the touch, but they burn just fine) and moving to a mix of paraffin & beeswax. (We now only make hand dipped pure beeswax candles)

The natural soaps and scented candles were rewarding products allowing us to expand to retail stores in central Wellington and we also gained enthusiastic customers at markets throughout New Zealand. This support continues to this day - thank you all very much, and with the development of website sales, we have been able to reach an ever widening customer base.

OUR INGREDIENTS

Grown, gathered and made by hand

Our products do not use mineral oils, synthetic perfumes, or any of the many dubious additives found in most commercial products. We use an ecocert certified preservative in our creams.

We are also now pleased to be able to source more essential oils and other ingredients that are certified organic. We grow our own organic calendula flowers that we utilise in our products, and pick fresh garden herbs to brew for our herbal soap.

NZ Handcrafted

Every product is made by hand in our making room in the Pohangina Valley, Manawatu — the same valley we have called home since 1981, and where we set up our new making room in 2018.

Home-Grown Calendula

We grow our own organic calendula flowers and use them in our creams and balms, alongside more and more essential oils and other ingredients that are certified organic.

30 Years in 2018

In 2018 we celebrated 30 years in operation, growing from hand-dipped candles and natural soaps to a full natural range — still sold at a price the ordinary person can afford.
